Kerala Fish Curry, also known as "Meen Curry," is a flavorful and tangy South Indian dish. To make it, follow these steps:

Ingredients:

Fish (preferably a firm white fish like kingfish or mackerel) - 500g

Coconut Oil - 2 tablespoons

Mustard Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon

Curry Leaves - a few

Shallots (sliced) - 5-6

Ginger (finely chopped) - 1 tablespoon

Garlic (finely chopped) - 1 tablespoon

Green Chilies (slit) - 2-3 (adjust according to your spice preference)

Turmeric Powder - 1/2 teaspoon

Red Chili Powder - 1 teaspoon

Coriander Powder - 1 teaspoon

Fenugreek Seeds - 1/4 teaspoon

Tamarind Pulp - lemon-sized ball soaked in water and strained

Water - 1 to 1.5 cups (adjust for desired consistency)

Salt - to taste

Coconut Milk - 1/2 cup (optional)

Instructions:

Clean the fish thoroughly, removing scales and gut. Cut into medium-sized pieces and marinate with a pinch of turmeric and salt. Set aside for 15-20 minutes.

Heat coconut oil in a deep pan or clay pot (preferred for authentic flavor). Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add curry leaves, sliced shallots, chopped ginger, chopped garlic, and green chilies. Sauté until the shallots turn golden brown.

Lower the heat and add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Stir well for a minute, ensuring the spices don't burn.

Add the tamarind pulp and water to the pan. Mix well and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.

Add the marinated fish pieces and salt. Cover and simmer until the fish is cooked through. Be gentle when stirring to avoid breaking the fish pieces.

In a separate small pan, dry roast fenugreek seeds until they turn slightly brown. Grind the roasted seeds into a fine powder.

Once the fish is cooked, add the roasted fenugreek powder to the curry. Gently mix it in.

If desired, add coconut milk for a richer texture. Simmer for a couple of minutes.

Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. If you prefer a tangier flavor, you can add more tamarind pulp.

Once everything is well combined, remove from heat. Let the flavors meld for a while before serving.

Serve the Kerala Fish Curry with steamed rice or appam (a traditional South Indian pancake).
